If Life Were A Song
I had been wanting to write something that emulated Edgar A. Guest for some time. Are you familiar with his popular (somewhat older) 'It Couldn't Be Done'? Very rhythmic and lyric with a specific lilt. I have had this poem of his hanging on my wall for many years as my father had also done for many years. The paper is yellowed and somewhat brittle. I just looked over at it on the wall as I typed this sentence.
It was coming up on Rachel's 21st birthday (singer, pianist, writer) I thought writing a lyric that had his upbeat heart in it comparing the 'value' of one's life to a song made for a great challenge. I was alone in the house and sat in the music room in my favorite chair by the fireplace. I had put a load of clothes in the dryer. When the buzzer buzzed I was done. I gave her the four verses and she loved it. We had talked briefly about how a complementary chorus would make it more suitable to be a song. Several days later I sent her the lyric and she said she cried all over again. The added chorus just crystallizes the meaning of the song. I love that chorus!
